More than 1,700 tonnes of storm-related tree debris taken to landfills

The City of Winnipeg says that as of Tuesday, October 22, 2019 more than 1,700 tonnes of storm-related wood debris has been collected at its 4R depots as well as the Brady Road and Summit Road Landfills.

The debris will be processed and reused said the City’s Manager of Solid Waste, Michael Gordichuk.

One such use will be to process the wood into chips and mixing it with biosolids and street sweepings. The resulting soil-like material is then used to landscape, or cap, finished landfill areas.

“We’ve seen considerably more traffic at our designated disposal sites since the October storm event,” said Gordichuk. “We’ve had over 12,000 visits by residential customers dropping off storm-related wood debris at the 4R Winnipeg Depots and the landfill sites. We want to thank all the residents who have, and continue to safely deposit storm-related wood debris at one of the City’s designated sites.”

A number of people have been ticketed by RCMP while hauling wood debris for having unsecured loads. The city says to make sure to cover or secure the materials being hauled to the 4R depots or landfills as is required by the Highway Traffic Act.
