Stony Mountain Institution escapee captured in Selkirk

An integrated team of police officers from the RCMP and the Winnipeg Police Service captured an escapee from Stony Mountain Institution on Monday, January 15, 2024.

According to police the inmate had made his escape while on a supervised visit in Winnipeg on January 10, 2024. The escapee was identified as 24-year-old Terry Dutko.

Investigators with the Manitoba Integrated Violent Offender Apprehension Unit (MIVOAU), an integrated team consisting of Manitoba RCMP and Winnipeg Police Service officers, located the suspect at a residence on Toronto Avenue in Selkirk, Manitoba.

As officers approached the residence, Dutko hightailed it out the back of the home and tried to evade capture.

Officers needed help from an RCMP police dog to bring the escapee into custody. Dutko resisted the dog by punching and kicking the animal but officers were able to get him into custody.

Dutko was taken to hospital for treatment due to injuries he suffered while interacting with the dog.

Two RCMP officers and a Winnipeg Police Service officer also suffered injuries during the arrest. They were all treated and released.

Dutko was taken back to prison and will faces charges including Unlawfully at Large, Resisting Arrest x2 and Assaulting a Police Officer x2.
