A 36-year-old male is facing more than a dozen charges after being arrested as part of a stolen vehicle investigation early Saturday morning, December 18, 2021.
Police say that just before 1:30 am a stolen truck with stolen plate on it was seen driving in the Hespeler Avenue and Beatrice Street area. As officers tried to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle but it sped off at a high of speed. The vehicle was found abandoned within a few minutes near Sinclair Street and Caruthers Avenue.
Police brought in a K-9 unit and tracked the suspect to a home in the 700 block of Bannerman Avenue near Arlington Street. Police found the suspect on the roof of the house. He had climbed a tree in his efforts to hide from officers.
Officers ordered the man down from the roof and placed him under arrest after a brief struggle. The keys to the stolen truck were found in the suspect’s possession and two cans of bear spray were also seized, one from the roof of the house and one in the stolen vehicle.
Investigators say the the truck had been stolen on December 13, 2021 after it had been left running in the Munroe West neighbourhood. The licence places were stolen on Dec 17, from a truck in the Spence neighbourhood.
Douglas Bruce Smith has been charged for his alleged involvement with two counts of Possession of a Prohibited or Restricted Weapon Knowing its Possession is Unauthorized, two counts of Possession of Firearm, Restricted/Prohibited Weapon or Ammunition Contrary to Prohibition Order, Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 and seven counts of Fail to Comply with Condition of Release Order.
Smith was detained in custody.
