Stolen vehicle suspect leads police on chase, crashes into ditch

A 32-year-old male is sitting in the Winnipeg Remand Centre today after leading police on a chase through a construction and onto the north Perimeter Highway.

It happened early in the morning hours on September 4, 2018,

Police say that patrol officers came across a vehicle that had been reported stolen to Selkirk RCMP on September 3, 2018, just after 1:30 am in the area of Chalmers Avenue and Watt Street.

As the officers attempted a traffic stop on the vehicle it sped away.

The vehicle was soon located again on Lagimodiere Boulevard near the Perimeter Highway. In an attempt to flee from officer once more the driver headed eastbound through a construction site and onto the Perimeter. As officers followed the stolen vehicle made a u-turn and headed westbound back through the construction area then over an unfinished overpass.

Police followed the diver who continued west and eventually crashing into a ditch near McPhillips Street.

The driver was taken into custody. A search of the vehicle found a backpack with identification and a number of prescription pads stolen from various places in Winnipeg and Brandon.

Joseph Louis Savino, 32 from Winnipeg has been charged for his alleged involvement with:

  • Possess Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000
  • Possess Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 X7
  • Flight While Pursued by Peace Officer
  • Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle
  • Resist Peace Officer

At the time of his arrest, Savino was also wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for Suspension of Statutory Release.
