Stolen Truck Leads to Drug Bust at Assiniboia Downs

Winnipeg Police arrested two individuals on Saturday evening after a stolen truck led them to a drug bust at Assiniboia Downs.

The incident began around 6:45 p.m. when officers received information about a stolen 2001 Dodge Ram 1500 operating in the St. James area. The truck had been reported stolen earlier that morning during a commercial break-in on McDermot Avenue.

Officers tracked the vehicle to the 3900 block of Portage Avenue where the driver and a passenger attempted to flee on foot after becoming stuck in a snowbank.

With the assistance of Assiniboia Downs security, both suspects were located and arrested without incident in the VLT lounge.

A search of the suspects and the stolen truck yielded approximately 28 grams of cocaine, 57 grams of methamphetamine, $1,650 in Canadian currency, scales, and packaging materials.

Liam John Freeman, 24, of Winnipeg, and Desiree Dawn Hjorleifson, 25, of Arborg, MB, face a combined list of charges for their alleged involvement including possession of property obtained by crime, drug trafficking, and failing to comply with release orders.

Both suspects remain in custody.
