According to the Winnipeg Police Service, at approximately 5:59 p.m. on April 11, 2025, Central District General Patrol officers spotted a Ford F250, which had been previously reported stolen, travelling northbound in the 300 block of Home Street, between Portage Avenue and St. Matthews Street.
In an attempt to prevent the stolen vehicle from fleeing, officers strategically positioned their cruiser across the single lane of traffic. As the Ford F250 approached, the driver halted and then reversed, colliding with a civilian passenger vehicle directly behind them.
The situation escalated when the driver then allegedly drove towards the police officers, who had exited their cruiser. This confrontation led to the officers discharging their firearms at the stolen vehicle.
Despite the gunfire, the stolen truck mounted the east boulevard and continued northbound towards St. Matthews Avenue. There, it collided with a second responding police unit. This impact caused the stolen vehicle to lose control and crash into a residence located in the 500 block of Home Street.
The collision resulted in a fire that quickly spread to a large fuel tank situated in the bed of the pick-up truck. Subsequently, the fuel tank exploded, engulfing both the house and the truck in flames.
The driver of the stolen vehicle, identified as a 48-year-old male, and a 29-year-old female passenger fled the scene on foot. However, they were apprehended nearby by responding officers and have been taken into custody.
Authorities have confirmed that no injuries were reported as a result of this incident.
Due to the involvement of police discharging their firearms, the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) has been notified and has assumed responsibility for the ongoing investigation.
