Winnipeg Police are investigating after a stolen SUV crashed into a fire hydrant on Waverley Street at Grovesnor Avenue shortly after 3:00 pm on Sunday, April 24, 2022.
A News 4 crew witnessed the vehicle travelling eastbound on Grovesnor Avenue at a very high rate of speed seconds before the collision. The driver of the vehicle attempted to avoid the calming circle in the middle of the roadway at Waverley Street before crossing the intersection, jumping the curb and crashing head-on into the fire hydrant.
Seven people were in the vehicle at the time of the collision. The male driver, a female passenger and a male passenger fled the scene shortly before emergency crews arrived. Four other passengers, a 30-year-old female, an 18-year-old male, a 17-year-old male and a 14-year-old female remained on the scene.
The 17-year-old male sustained injuries and was transported to the hospital in unknown condition. Others in the vehicle said that he had been in a fight prior to getting into the vehicle. They also told News 4 that they did not know who the vehicle belonged to and that it had been stolen.
The 14-year-old female was also transported to hospital with unknown injuries.
