Steinbach RCMP Officer Involved in Fatal Shooting on Highway 52

A 51-year-old man from the Ste. Anne area was pronounced dead at the scene following an altercation with Steinbach RCMP officers on Highway 52 near La Broquerie in the early hours of May 24, 2024.

The incident began around 12:30 am when RCMP officers, responding to multiple reports of a suspicious male, spotted a vehicle stopped on the highway. Upon approaching the vehicle, they observed the suspect assaulting a female driver while brandishing an edged weapon.

Despite orders to step away and drop the weapon, the suspect advanced towards the officers, leading one officer to discharge their firearm. Medical aid was provided until Emergency Medical Services arrived. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female victim sustained minor injuries from the assault and is currently receiving medical attention.

The RCMP Major Crime Services has taken over the ongoing investigation, with oversight provided by the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) of Manitoba.

As a result of the incident, Highway 52 remains closed as of the morning of May 24, with a detour in place. Motorists are advised to avoid the area if possible.
