Standoff with police ends with suspect detained for mental health assessment

Winnipeg Police were involved in a five and a half hour standoff on Thursday, January 5, 2023, with an adult male acting erratically in a Kennedy Street apartment building.

Police say that Tactical Support Team officers were first to respond to the building around 12:15 am after receiving a report from building security that the male was threatening people in a hallway with a knife. When the officers arrived the suspect was still armed with the knife. Police used a less-lethal impact round on the male but it had little effect. The suspect then went into a suite an barricaded himself inside.

Attempts were made to communicate with the male including bringing in the Crisis Negotiation Unit, but they were not successful.

Around 5:30 am CS gas was deployed after tactical support team members breached the door. The male exited the suite, still acting erratically, and was taken into custody after a taser was deployed.

The male was taken to hospital for an assessment under the Mental Health Act.

No injuries were reported.
