A 43-year-old Brandon man has been arrested after an almost 10-hour standoff with Brandon Police that ended early Wednesday morning, May 2, 2018,
It began after police showed up at the mans home to arrest him for an incident that happened earlier in the day. According to investigators, the man had gone into the rental office for a property he was a tenant of and grabbed an employee and then threatened to set another employee on fire.
Just after 3:30 pm officers attempted to arrest the male suspect in the 1500 block of Louise Avenue for uttering threats. As officers approached the residence the suspect was seen holding a knife and he started threatening officers. He told them that he had Molotov cocktails and a chainsaw inside.
Police tried to talk the man out but it became apparent after several failed attempts to negotiate that the suspect could be suffering a mental health crisis.
Officers called in the Emergency Response Team an hour and a half after the incident started and over the next several hours several more attempts were made to solve the situation.
Just after 1:00 am the 43-year-old suspect ended the standoff and exited the building. He was taken into custody and taken to the Brandon Regional Health Centre for treatment.
Police say that an investigation is determining if criminal charges should be laid.
