Standing hearing for inquest into death of Lewis Sitar

A standing hearing has been scheduled for March 14, 2019, to determine who can participate in the upcoming inquest into the death of Lewis Sitar.

Sitar, age 50, was assaulted on February 20, 2017, in his cell at Stony Mountain Institution just north of Winnipeg. Paramedics took Sitar to hospital but he died on March 3, 2017, after he was taken off life support.

It was determined that he had died due to blunt force trauma caused by the assault.

Two inmate have been convicted of manslaughter in the death of Sitar

The chief medical examiner has called an inquest into the death of Star under the Fatality Inquiries Act to explore the circumstances and events that led to Star’s death and to determine if anything could have been done differently to prevent similar deaths in the future.

Prior to the inquest beginning a judge will determine who can participate in the process and question witnesses.
