A stabbing incident occurred on Jorowski Cove at approximately 12:10 p.m. on April 18, 2024, leading to serious injuries. The Winnipeg Police Service responded promptly to the scene.
Upon arrival, East District General Patrol officers found a 21-year-old male victim suffering from upper body injuries sustained from the stabbing. The officers provided emergency medical care, applying chest seals to the victim. He was transported to the hospital in critical condition, which was later upgraded to stable. The adult male suspect had fled the scene on foot before the police arrived.
The Major Crimes Unit took over the investigation and discovered that the suspect and the victim, who were known to each other, had been in a residence on Jorowski Cove when a verbal argument escalated. The suspect produced a machete and struck the victim multiple times, causing serious injuries.
Approximately 40 minutes after the initial report, at 12:50 p.m., officers arrested the suspect at his residence without incident. They also recovered a machete, which was seized as evidence.
The suspect, identified as 19-year-old Phoenix Kalen Kawakami of Winnipeg, has been charged with Aggravated Assault, Possession of a Weapon, Failure to Comply with Condition of Release Order, and Breach of Recognizance. He has been detained in custody. The investigation is ongoing.
