Spring thaw outlook says conditions favourable

Manitoba officials say that conditions are favourable this spring as the annual run-off approaches.

“Our outlook remains similar to the first outlook we released in late February and our focus continues to be on the Red River this spring,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler.  “Forecasters are expecting a significant inflow of water from the northern United States and they expect high water levels similar to last spring, barring a major early April storm with substantial precipitation or a fast melt.”

According to Manitoba Infrasructure’s Hydrologic Forcast Centre they expect that with favourable weather conditions water levels along the Red River to be similar to 2019 levels and Highway 75 to remain open between Winnipeg and the U.S. border.

The centre does anticipate that the floodway will be put into operation at some point similar to last year.

Along the Assiniboine River basin officials believe that water will mostly remain within the banks but it is possible agricultural land could be flooded in some areas.
