Spring snow storms expected this week in Southern Manitoba

Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a Winter Storm Watch for the City of Winnipeg and parts of southeastern Manitoba on Sunday, April 2, 2023.

According to the national forecaster a Colorado Low is poised to impact southeastern Manitoba Tuesday through Thursday this week.

Although the exact track of the storm is not known at this time it is expected that between 15 to 25 cm of snow will fall in the southeast corner of the province. Forecasters say that the latest models seem to indicate the storm may follow a more northerly track.

In addition to heavy snow, strong northerly winds will produce poor visibilities in blowing snow. Travel is expected to be hazardous during the storm due to reduced visibility in some locations.

The current forecast also shows a system tracking across the southern Prairies that will bring 10 to 15 cm of snow to parts of southern Manitoba, including the western Red River Valley and southern Interlake on Sunday evening. In Winnipeg that storm is expected to drop between 5-7 cm of snow with winds of 40km/h gusting to 60.

A snowfall warning has been issued for areas west of Winnipeg.
