Keep off the ice province warns

With spring melting in full swing the province is warning the public of potentially hazardous ice conditions.

Rivers, lakes, ponds and drainage ditches are all considered dangerous at this time of year because although ice may appear normal it can be very thin and not be able to support the weight of people or heavy objects like vehicles.

Manitoba Sustainable Development says that ice fishing shelters should already be off of the Red River and must be all lakes and waterways no later than March 31st in the southern half of the province. In the north, fishing shacks must be removed by April 15th. Conservation officers may ask you to remove shelters prior to these dates due to unsafe ice conditions.
