South African firefighters arrive to fight Manitoba wildfires

More than 100 firefighters and support staff from South Africa arrived in Winnipeg on Wednesday, August 11, 2021, to help battle Manitoba’s wildfires.

The South African group will bolster the ranks of more than 400 Manitoba firefighters in fighting 143 active wildfires burning across the province.

Two water bombers from Quebec and four from the Northwest Territories as well as more than two dozen helicopters are also helping with fire suppression.

So far this year Manitoba has had 431 wildfires.
