Careless smoking cause of Parr Street fire

Careless disposal of smoking materials seems to be the cause of an early morning fire on Parr Street Tuesday morning, July 9, 2019.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service says that they responded to reports of a fire in a one and a half storey single family home around 4:22 am.

Everyone inside the structure were able to escape before fire crews arrived.

Firefighters fought the blaze using an offensive attack and got it under control within about 30 minutes.

No injuries were reported.

Fire officials remind Winnipeggers to always be careful when disposing smoking materials. They offer these tips:

  • Always use a deep, sturdy ashtray and place it away from anything that can burn.
  • Before you throw away butts and ashes, make sure they are out. Dousing them in water or sand is the best way to do that.
  • Never discard butts in vegetation, mulch, potted plants, landscaping or peat moss or other things that could easily ignite.
  • Keep cigarettes, lighters, matches, and other smoking materials up high out of the reach of children, in a locked cabinet.
