Winnipeg police have released more information about a Charles Street standoff News 4 told you about exclusively over the weekend.
Officers from the WPS Tactical Support Team and the Guns & Gangs units were executing a warrant related to a firearms investigation on January 28, 2022, at a house in the 100 block of Charles Street when the standoff began.
Officers were seen surrounding the two-storey house just north of Selkirk Avenue to execute the warrant at about 9:00 p.m. Police say three people inside refused commands to exit the residence, and barricaded themselves inside for about four hours.
Believing firearms were inside with the suspects, police used specialty equipment including their tactical Armoured Rescue Vehicle or ARV1 to assert their presence on the scene.
At approximately 11:45 p.m. police fired what appeared to be tear gas into the home and minutes later were seen escorting three people in handcuffs to a waiting police vehicle.
In total, six people were taken into custody, and more than 70 charges have been laid. Six firearms were seized, along with ammunition and illicit drugs. All but one of the people arrest were females from Winnipeg. They are:
Billie Erin Kozub, 38, 29 firearms, drugs and court order offences;
Kacie Mekish, 25, nine firearms and court order offences;
Praire Sky Atkinson, 26, seven firearms-related offences;
Meaghan Pearce, 33, five firearms-related offences;
Raven Pearce, 27, four firearms-related offences.
One male, 29-year-old Kenneth Andrew Edwards, faces16 firearms-related offences. All six were detained in custody.
