Winnipeg Police are investigating a single-vehicle rollover that happened early Sunday morning, June 28, 2020.
Around 1:15 am emergency crews were called to the intersection of Portage Avenue and Cavalier Drive after a car hit the centre concrete barricade, sheared off a traffic light pole at the base then rolled onto its roof and continued to slide down the eastbound lanes towards traffic.
The car caught on fire after it rolled. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded and put the fire out quickly.
One person was transported to hospital in unstable condition.
According to RCMP, the driver of the vehicle sped past an RCMP cruiser on Portage Avenue at 165 km/hr just prior to the crash. The officer was able to pull the driver out of the burning vehicle.
RCMP blocked traffic on Portage Avenue in both directions until Winnipeg Police arrived on the scene.
Westbound Portage Avenue was closed overnight as members of the Traffic Unit investigated the incident.
Winnipeg Police say the driver of the vehicle has been charged with Impaired Driving.
