Simplot and the Government of Manitoba announced on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, that they will be expanding their plant in Portage la Prairie.
The company will be investing $460 million to more than double their operation in the Manitoba city about 85 kilometres west of Winnipeg. Currently the facility id 180,000 sq ft but beginning this Spring construction will start on a building that when complete will see the facility grow to 460,000 sq ft.
“Our government is excited to join Simplot today to announce a historic investment and expansion of their Manitoba operations,” said Premier Brian Pallister. “Simplot has already established itself as a member of the community of Portage la Prairie and now they are doubling their operations and investing in the future of Manitoba.”
“Manitoba delivers in so many ways that will help make this project a success,” said Mark McKellar, food group president, Simplot. “It has access to quality potatoes, a strong grower community, availability of highly skilled employees and distribution routes that continue to expand our footprint.”
With the expanded capacity Simplot says that the need for locally grown potatoes with more than double. On top of that, it is expected that an additional 87 full-time positions will be added to the current staff.
Manitoba will also be investing in the project by providing tax increment financing up to $6.31 million to assist with anticipated capital investments and road improvements. $522,000 in employee training contributions will also be made by the government.
Manitoba Hydro will provide $1 million in PowerSmart program funding for electrical and natural gas efficiency projects, based on the plant meeting program guidelines.
The plant expansion is expected to open by fall of 2019.
