Suspect throws shovel at police after assaulting man with screwdriver

A 26-year-old male is in custody after assaulting a man with a screwdriver and throwing a snow shovel at police during an arrest attempt.

Just after 1:00 pm on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 police had responded to the report of a person being stabbed with a screwdriver in the 400 block of Dufferin Avenue.

As a police supervisor arrived on scene he located the suspect walking near Aikins Street and Stella Avenue. The officer followed the suspect to a rear yard of a home in the 200 block of Stella. At this point, the suspect picked up a shovel and began walking towards the police car. The supervisor ordered the suspect to drop the shovel as he exited the vehicle and drew his taser. The suspect began walking away but turned and thew the shovel at the officer just missing him. The officer fired the taser but missed.

The man then pulled out the screwdriver and the supervisor fired the taser a second time but it was once again ineffective.

As other officers arrived on the scene the suspect continued to make threats. The man took off but was tracked by police. As officers approached the suspect raised the screwdriver aggressively and was hit by a taser. He was taken into custody.

Police say that they believe that the suspect was high on Meth at the time of the incident.

Brett Mikal Keeper was charged for his alleged involvement with Assault a Peace Officer with a Weapon (x2), Assault with a Weapon, Resist Peace Officer and Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x2).
