Winnipeg Police responded to a report of shots fired on Rockwood Street at Warsaw Avenue just after 9:00pm on Sunday, July 7, 2019.
Witnesses tell News 4 that two men wearing masks and hoodies walked to the area beside the outdoor basketball courts when a single shot was fired.
Witnesses say the suspects headed east down a nearby lane fleeing in a waiting black sedan before police arrived.
Walter Zapanta saw the incident as it unfolded ” We were just playing basketball when all of the sudden gunshot, one gunshot, out of nowhere. Everybody ran.”
Officers searched the area for the suspects without any luck.
Matt, an area resident, said that just prior to the shooting he saw two men walking towards the playground “I see these two kids with masks walking down Warsaw right in front of my house. I never paid much attention but then I was in my kitchen and heard a gunshot go off.”
Police marked several items in the grass between the sidewalk and the basketball courts as evidence as the investigation unfolded.
Officers were on scene for several hours.
