Sewage spill makes Gimli area beach unsafe to swim in

Manitoba Health is advising Manitobans to avoid going into the water near Spruce Sands Beach in the RM of Gimli after a sewage spill on July 15, 2022.

The province says that due to the spill the water quality has elevated E. coli levels and it is not safe for humans or animals. It is recommended that going into the water is avoided until testing shows the water is safe for recreational use.

Signs indicating the beach is closed were posted on July 20, 2022. E. coli levels on July 19 exceeded 16,750 per 100/ml. Safe levels are considered to be below 200 per 100/ml.

Officials say the the spill was caused after a sewage line was damaged during routine ditch maintenance in the area.
