WINNIPEG WEATHER

Severe thunderstorm watch is in effect for Winnipeg and much of Southern Manitoba.

A low-pressure system moving in from Saskatchewan will track across southern Manitoba later Tuesday, September 19, 2017, bringing with it potentially dangerous thunderstorms with damaging winds and torrential rain.

Rain will be widespread later today and tonight and some areas can see 20 to 30 mm.

Environment Canada is warning that severe thunderstorms may bring over 50 mm of rain as they pass through Westman this afternoon into the Red River Valley and Interlake this evening.

Winds associated with severe weather can cause damage to buildings, knock down trees, and blow vehicles off the road. Heavy downpours and large volumes of rain can overwhelm municipal sewer systems causing flooded basements. They can also case flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Lighting associated with active thunderstorms can kill so it is advisable to seek shelter during lighting activity.

Environment Canada issues thunderstorm watches when conditions are favourable for the development of thunderstorms that could produce large hail, damaging winds or torrential rainfall.
