Serious injury during arrest leads to IIU investigation

Manitoba’s police watchdog agency, The Independent Investigation Unit (IIU), is investigating after a suspect was allegedly injured during an arrest by Winnipeg Police Service on December 22, 2023.

According to officials, WPS officers were dispatched to a home in the 1500 block of Ross Avenue West for a suspicious circumstances call and learned enroute that the occupant of the residence was wanted on three outstanding warrants. Police also learned that the suspect associated with the suspicious circumstances call was in the area of Keewatin Street and Pacific Avenue.

When officers arrived in the area they spotted the suspect but he ran from them when they attempted to place him under arrest. A short foot pursuit occurred and the suspect resisted officers during his arrest. A taser was used in order to get the suspect to comply. Following his arrest the suspect complained of shortness of breath and dizziness.

The suspect was taken to hospital and it was determined he had two fractured ribs.

As fractured ribs meet the definition of a serious injury the IIU is mandated to investigated the incident.
