Serious gas leak shuts down Route 90 Tuesday morning

A serious gas leak Tuesday morning played havoc with traffic on Route 90 and the surrounding area as police set up roadblocks to divert traffic.

Just before 8:00 am a passerby near Logan Avenue and King Edward noticed a strong gas smell and called Manitoba Hydro. Crews tracked the smell to a sewer about 150 feet south of Logan Avenue.

Police and Firefighters were called to the area around 9:50 am out of an abundance of caution. Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service crews found gas levels to be at high levels and remains on scene until 11:30 am. Firefighters evacuated one building in the area as a precaution, no injuries were reported

Route 90 was closed in both directions between Dublin Street and Logan Avenue as Manitoba Hydro crews worked to repair the leak.

Officers also blocked Brookside Boulevard south of Logan Avenue as well as side streets between Route 90 and Keewatin Street.

Most businesses in the area remained open including a Shell gas station situated directly beside the leak.

Police noted just after 2:00 pm that southbound Route 90 at Logan Avenue will continue to be blocked for sometime but other roads in the area have begun to allow traffic.
