On the evening of July 22, 2024, at approximately 7:30 pm, Headingley RCMP responded to a distress call reporting a serious assault at Stony Mountain Institution. Upon arrival, officers discovered a 37-year-old male inmate suffering from severe injuries. The victim was promptly transported to a nearby hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.

In response to the incident, the RCMP Forensic Identification Unit (FIS) and RCMP Major Crime Services were deployed to the scene. The Major Crime Unit (MCU) has since taken over the investigation, working diligently to uncover the circumstances surrounding the assault.

The investigation remains ongoing as authorities seek to bring justice to the victim and ensure the safety of all inmates and staff at the institution.
