Second fire in Ellice Avenue building in less than 24 hours

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service was back fighting a fire at an apartment building in the 500 block of Ellice Avenue less than 24 hours after responding to another fire there.

Crews had extinguished a fire in the three-storey building around 2:45 am Monday morning, ventilated the structure and residents were then able to return to their suites.

The second fire was discovered in the building around 10:30 pm. Police were first on the scene and began evacuating the residents as heavy smoke billowed out of the structure.

Winnipeg Transit buses were brought in to provide temporary shelter to those evacuated.

Firefighters launched an offensive attack and the fire was declared under control at 11:55 pm.

Paramedics transported seven people to hospital in stable condition including six police officers. The officers were treated and released.

Unlike the earlier fire residents were not permitted to return to their suites. Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team was on the scene helping residents find alternate shelter.

Investigators continue to look into the cause of both fires.
