Scofflaws ticketed as province enforces public health orders

Manitoba’s COVID-19 enforcement officers were busy over the past week with 79 warnings and 95 tickets issued between November 16 and 22. That more than three times the amount of tickets issue the previous week.

In a media briefing this morning Premier Brian Pallister singled out a western Manitoba hotel that was ticketed in the past week.

“I have mixed emotions naming the business. I’m not trying to give them advertising here,” said Pallister. “But I do think all businesses need to understand that we’re serious about this being the wrong behaviour and we’re serious about getting the message out to Manitobans,”

The Premier named The Corona Hotel, in Glenella as a business ticked by liquor inspectors for having its beverage room open and people were playing pool. But the owner, Bob Fuglsang, disputes the ticket and says that the bar has been closed since November 12 and the people the liquor inspector heard were his family members.

The province said that ” nine $5,000 tickets to business, and 55 $1,296 tickets to individuals. Three band bylaw tickets were also issued by the Manitoba First Nations Police Service.”

28 tickets were also issued for not wearing a mask in an indoor public place. This specific fine was added last week to the public health orders and carries with it a $298 fine.

A total of $126,082 in fines were issued last week, up from $49,992 the week prior.

RCMP are also investigating a large gathering at a Steinbach area church on Sunday November 22 where more than 100 people attended. Police issued the minister with a $1,296 ticket and expect other tickets to be issued.

The minister also received a ticket for participating in a protest against COVID-19 public health orders in Steinbach on November 14, 2020. 16 tickets have been processed and more are expected to be handed out to those who participated in the process.
