School shut down due to COVID-19 outbreak

Collège Louis-Riel has temporarily closed its doors after the province declared an outbreak of COVID-19 at the school. This is the first school to close due to COVID-19 since students returned to classes in September.

According to Manitoba Public Health, 10 cohorts are self-isolating (six on October 28 and four others previously), as well as other staff and students. Collège Louis-Riel has been moved to orange on Pandemic Response System,

The St. Boniface school currently has seven cases linked to the outbreak as of 12:30 pm on Thursday, October 29, 2020.

Parents first got wind of the school closure when they were emailed a letter from Franco-Manitobaine school division superintendent Alain Laberge on Wednesday evening, October 28.

” Recent results from Winnipeg regional health indicate that there is an increasing number of reported cases in the area and although the vast majority of these cases come from outside our schools, they end up having an impact on our students and our staff. In particular, we note a resurgence of cases at Collège Louis-Riel,” said Leberge. “Although public health tells us that there are four new confirmed cases, in order to minimize the risk of transmission, we ask all parents to keep their children at home until November 6, inclusive. Students will be able to return to school on November 9.”

The letter goes on to say that students can continue their education by remote learning.

The province says that they are investigating to determine the transmission sources.
