The Manitoba Police Commission has released its 46-page report on how to improve safety in downtown Winnipeg.
Among the recommendations are increasing foot patrols in the downtown, adding more security cameras (CCTV) in public areas and beefing up legislation to help deal with panhandling.
“This initial report provides practical recommendations for actions and initiatives to increase public safety and reduce crime and we would like to thank the Manitoba Police Commission for its efforts,” said Justice Minister Cliff Cullen.
The report also recommends to government that legislation be amended so that other designated people could detain intoxicated persons. Currently, only Winnipeg Police officers and Cadets are able to detain people under the Intoxicated Persons Detention Act.
The minister says the province will be working with stakeholders to “help ensure many of these recommendations lead to a safer Manitoba and downtown Winnipeg.”
