Robber calls police to turn himself in

Winnipeg Police have solved 23 liquor store robberies after a 16-year-old called 911 to turn himself in.

Just after 5:00 pm on Thursday, August 30, 2018  emergency dispatchers received a hang-up call to 911 from a Pacific Avenue address. When the operator called back they spoke to an individual who asked them to send police to arrest him.

The youth was taken into custody and investigators have identified 23 different thefts from Manitoba Liquor Marts that he was allegedly responsible for totalling more than $11,000.

Police say that on many of the thefts the suspect had help from several other suspects.

In one of the recent thefts, the suspect and an accomplice concealed their faces as they entered a Liquor Mart on North Town Road. The store manager approached the suspects and was immediately threatened. As they began to steal a number of liquor bottles they were confronted by an off-duty RCMP officer who identified himself to them. The suspects began throwing bottles at the officer with one hitting him in the head allowing them to make their escape to a waiting vehicle behind the store.

The 16-year-old suspect is facing a number of charges for his alleged involvement including Robbery (x2), Assault a Peace Officer, Possession of a Weapon, Theft Over $5000, Possession of Property Obtained by Crime Over $5000, Fail to Comply with Sentence (x2)

He was also processed on the strength of four outstanding warrants for charges of:

– Theft Under $5000 (x6)
– Fail to Comply Sentence (x12)

24-year-old Caiden Jessy Bjornsson was arrested later Thursday night near Keewatin Street and Logan Avenue in connection to the case. He has been charged for his alleged involvement with Robbery and Theft under $5,000.

Both Bjornsson and the youth were detained in custody.
