Road Racing is to blame for a serious collision on Portage Avenue just after 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 18, 2023.
Winnipeg Police say that a white Honda Civic and a black Volkswagen GTI had been street racing in the westbound lanes of Portage Avenue. As the vehicles approached Sturgeon Road an eastbound blue Honda Civic was turning northbound on Sturgeon Road. The white civic collided with the blue Honda causing a serious collision.
Two occupants in one vehicle were taken to hospital in critical and unstable condition. The lone occupant of the second vehicle was taken to hospital as a precaution. All of the vehicle occupants are now stable.
Police have charged the drives of the racing vehicles for their alleged involvement with:
- Race with another Motor Vehicle – HTA189 (1)
- Drive Carelessly – HTA 188 (2)
Both vehicles have been seized and impounded. The WPS Traffic Division continues to investigate the incident.
Police noted that as the evening went on officers spotted a vehicle travelling 127 km/hr in an 80 zone and pulled the driver over near Moray Street.
