Risk of major flooding this spring considered low

Manitoba Hydrologic Forecast Centre’s spring thaw outlook is looking good as the risk of Major flooding remains low.

Soil moisture levels were below normal at freeze-up and precipitation levels so far this winter have also been below normal. The risk of major high water activity is low for southern Manitoba and central Manitoba basins. In the north the risk is considered low to moderate.

“Our Hydrologic Forecast Centre provides accurate and timely hydrologic forecasts, and monitors river flows and lake levels daily throughout the year. We have complete confidence that our government is prepared to respond to any potential hydrologic event and ensure the safety of all Manitobans,” said Infrastructure Minister Ron Schuler.

The forecast centre also reported that they do not expect the Red River Floodway to be operated if weather conditions remain normal or favourable. If above normal precipitation or a major weather event happens this spring then the floodway could be used to lower water levels within the City of Winnipeg.

The province says that they are planning to release a second spring thaw outlook at the end of March.
