Justice Minister Cameron Friesen has confirmed that the review by RCMP into the death of a woman living with a member of the Brandon Police Board has been completed.
In July 2019 Christine Mitchell died from a drug overdose while living in the home of Brandon’s city manager, Rod Sage. Sage was also a non-voting member of the Brandon Police Board at the time.
In October of that year, the justice minister asked the RCMP to review the investigation conducted by the Brandon Police Service.
The review noted that BPS conducted an “appropriate and professional investigation in relation to Mitchell’s death,” the minister noted.
According to the review the time it took for the death to be reported to police and the medical examiner was a concern. It concluded the gap in reporting was due to a misinterpretation of the Fatality Inquiries Act by the Brandon Regional Health Centre.
The minister said that the Office of the Medical Examiner and Prairie Mountain Health have reviewed the requirements under the Fatality Inquiries Act. As a result Brandon Regional Health Centre has update its policies.
