Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service responded to a fire in a two-story apartment building in the first 100 block of Renfrew Street just after 10:00 am on Sunday, July 10, 2022.
Firefighters encountered smoke coming from the building as they arrived on the scene. An offensive attack was launched and the fire was declared under control at 10:51 am.
The building occupants were able to gat mount before emergency crews arrived. One bystander from the neighbourhood attempted to search the building looking for anyone who may be trapped inside. While searching he sustained injuries and was taken to hospital in stable condition. Firefighters searched the building and found no one inside. No other injuries were reported.
Fire damage was contained to the suite of origin but other areas suffered damage from smoke and water.
The City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services Unit was called to help residents find temporary accommodations.
Fire officials say that the cause of the fire appears to have been caused by an electrical malfunction and is considered accidental.
