Red River College to train people to work in PCHs

Red River College in partnership with the Manitoba Government has developed a one week intensive training course that will train people to work as uncertified health-care aides at personal care homes.

The micro-credential will be offered free of charge if the student commits to work for at least three months in a personal care home following completion of the course.

“We must do everything possible to ensure we have staff is to support the care needs of residents in our long-term care homes. This requires an immediate increase in the available workforceand this new training program addresses this goal,” said Health, Seniors and Active Living Minister Cameron Friesen

The course will provide both virtual and in-class elements and consist of five days of theory offered virtually and two days of in-person skills education.

Once the course is complete students could be involved in resident observation, companionship, redirection, stocking of supplies as well as other duties. They will be under the supervision of a manager or nursing supervisor.

The micro-credential course will be offered in Winnipeg, Selkirk, Steinbach, Winkler and Portage la Prairie.

Students must be 18 and have a minimum Grade 10 education. There is no need to have previous experience in direct care to take the course.
