RCMP want motorists to stay off the roads in southern Manitoba during the storm

Manitoba RCMP are calling on motorists to stay off closed roads and highways during the storm forecasted to hit southern Manitoba beginning Tuesday night and continuing into Friday, April 15, 2022.

Environment Canada has issued winter storm and blizzard warnings for all of Southern Manitoba including the City of Winnipeg. The storm is expected to bring 30-40 cm to the capital region with higher amounts expected in some regions.

Visibility on roads outside Winnipeg are expected to be near zero in blowing snow. The national forecasted has said they anticipate that widespread highway closures are a near-certainty. By Wednesday evening they say even travel within communities may become impossible as the heavy snow and strong winds continue.

“We are anticipating the closure of highways and roads throughout southern Manitoba due to the oncoming winter storm.  Drivers are urged to get to their destinations today, to stay home and to only travel if absolutely necessary,” said Corporal Julie Courchaine, spokesperson for the Manitoba RCMP. “Our officers across southern Manitoba are getting prepared for the storm but even with snowmobiles and other tracked vehicles at the ready, officers may still not be able to reach stranded motorists.”

The mounties say that if travel is absolutely necessary there are a number of things you should do:

  • Check road conditions BEFORE heading out. An updated list of road conditions can be found at: https://www.manitoba511.ca/en/
  • Advise someone of your travel and what road/highway you will be taking and what time you expect to arrive.
  • Ensure your cell phone is fully charged.
  • Carry a winter safety kit with a flashlight, emergency food and water, candles, blankets, booster cables, tow straps and a shovel.
  • If stranded in a snowbank, ensure your vehicle’s exhaust is clear and free of snow.
  • Slow down, use caution and drive to conditions.
  • Increase your distance between other vehicles as stopping distance is double on an icy road.
  • DO NOT DRIVE ON CLOSED ROADS OR HIGHWAYS

The storm is expected to be the worst experienced in Southern Manitoba in decades. It is expected that high winds will cause drifting and blowing snow making it difficult for emergency crews to reach stranded drivers.
