Three arrested, 4th suspect wanted in shooting of RCMP officer

A 42-year-old RCMP officer was airlifted to a Winnipeg hospital with serious injuries after being shot while responding to a break and enter near Onanole, Manitoba.

Onanole is about 220 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.

 

 

Police say that as officers arrived on scene around 9:30 pm on Wednesday night, August 29, 2018, they were shot at.

The suspects fled the scene.

Early Thursday three adult male suspects were arrested.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Scott Kolody said that they are searching for a fourth male suspect.

“We still have a suspect at large, so we continue to ask citizens to remain vigilant and to call 911 if they see anything suspicious,” said Kolody.

That suspect may be in a Black 2005 GMC Sierra extended cab truck with Manitoba licence plate GBX 476.

The RCMP Emergency Response Team has been deployed, as has RCMP Police Dog Services, RCMP Major Crime Unit, and Manitoba West District resources.

Roadblocks were set up around the community overnight and a large police presence remains in the Onanole area as officers continued their manhunt.

The suspect is considered armed and dangerous said police.

Premier Brian Pallister issued a statement Thursday morning calling the shooting a  “stark reminder of the danger that police officers face”. He also extended thoughts and prayers to the officer and his family as well as thanking RCMP, first responders and health professionals for their incredible efforts.

“The RCMP is a family and such circumstances affect every officer and employee coast-to-coast. We appreciate all the support we have been receiving, and those thoughts are being passed along to our injured officer and his family,” Kolody said.

RCMP Superintendent Scott McMurchy said officers did not return fire during the incident. The injured officer’s partner was focused on getting medical attention for him at the time.

McMurchy told media that the RCMP believe they know who the fourth suspect is but could not confirm if the male is an adult or a youth.

 

 

 

 

 

 

RCMP reported just before 4:00 pm that the fourth suspect in the shooting has been captured.

Early this afternoon police surrounded a home in Neepawa and were involved in a standoff with the suspect for a few hours before officers were able to take him into custody.
