RCMP shot and killed suspect who assaulted officer, stole his sidearm and police van

RCMP have shot and killed a male suspect during an arrest.

Around 8:30 pm on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 an RCMP officer was assaulted on Highway near St. Laurent. The suspect was able to disarm the officer, take his gun and steal his unmarked police van. According to officials the suspect was being escorted from Ashern to Winnipeg when the assault occurred.

Police issued a public plea around midnight asking for the public’s help in locating the van. At the time they reported the 18-year-old male suspect was armed and dangerous.

Just before 1:00 am officers located the van on Highway 417 near Lake Manitoba First Nation. Police pursued the vehicle until it ended when the van hit a ditch.

The male suspect was with the van and during the course of his arrest he was shot and killed by police.

RCMP reported the incident to the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba and they have taken charge of the investigation into the shooting.

The condition of the assaulted officer and the name of the suspect have not been released
