RCMP shoot at driver as he accelerates vehicle towards officer

Early Sunday morning, June 10, 2018, around 3:00 am police in Selkirk tried to pull over a pickup truck that had no licence plates. The driver ignored the patrolling officer and fled to a wooded area and travelled along an unmaintained trail off of Highway 204.

The officer stopped his vehicle at the trailhead and followed on foot. As the officer reached the vehicle he ordered the driver to step out at which point the driver accelerated fast and pushed a downed tree into the officer hitting his leg. The driver backed up and again sped towards the officer. The officer responded by firing his sidearm at the driver. The driver once again sped off.

Soon afterwards police found the pickup truck abandoned.

The investigation continued and a 17-year-old male from the RM of St. Andrews has been arrested and charged.

He is facing Aggravated Assault, Assault with Weapon, Assault Police Officer, Flight from Police, Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle, Drive while Suspended, Public Mischief and Fail to Comply with Undertaking.

He is detained in custody.

The officer that was hit by the tree suffered only minor injuries that did not require him to be taken to hospital.

RCMP continue to investigate the incident.
