Schools were locked down as a precaution and residents were asked to lock doors and windows and turn off inside lights.
Police stopped a stolen vehicle earlier in the afternoon after they learned that it may contain multiple weapons. Two females were arrested at the traffic stop at Panko’s Food store but the male suspect ran off carrying a long gun.
In a media release RCMP indicate that the suspect was involved in an armed robbery.
Police are asking anyone who see anything suspicious to call 911.
Officers from multiple detachments are searching the area for the suspect.
As of 6:00 pm officers were still searching the city 85 kilometres west of Winnipeg but have removed the lock down on all but one school. Fort la Reine is in the area where police are concentrating their search in that area of the city. Approximately 200 students and staff remained in lock down until just after 7:00pm before police deemed it is safe for them to leave.
Only Fort la Reine School remains in lockdown. At all other Portage schools, children will only be released to guardians #rcmpmb
