RCMP responded to an armed robbery
RCMP have revealed what happened earlier in the day on June 27, 2017 that lead up to lock downs and a manhunt in Portage la Prairie.
It all began just before 2:00 pm when RCMP in Headingly received a report of an armed robbery in the RM of St. Francois Xavier. The investigation uncovered that a male and two females had allegedly pulled up to a home in the rural area just off Highway 26 and confronted the homeowner. The male suspect threatened the resident with a gun and demanded he turn over all his guns and his car keys.
The victim in the robbery complied and gave the suspects what they demanded. He was not injured in the confrontation.
The suspects then set the vehicle they had arrived in on fire and took off in the homeowner’s vehicle, a Buick Lacrosse.
RCMP say that they were able to track the vehicle as it was heading to Portage la Prairie.
Since officers had knowledge that the suspect was armed and that he had threatened someone already they implemented measures to alert the public and lockdown local schools.
Police were able to stop the vehicle in Portage and arrest the two female suspects but the male suspect fled causing an extensive manhunt.
Around 6:00 pm after receiving a tip from an area resident the RCMP located the male suspect near the highway just east of Portage. He was shot by officers receiving non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation surrounding the arrest is being undertaken by the Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba.
Police have yet to identify the suspects or indicate what charges they are facing.
