RCMP in Pembina Valley responded to two vehicle vs train collisions on Tuesday, December 8, 2020.

Just after 2:00 pm RCMP were called to an uncontrolled intersection on Road 18 West, south of Highway 14 near Winkler.

Police say a vehicle was headed north on Road 18 when it collided with a westbound train. The vehicle rolled several times. The 53-year-old driver from Morden was taken to hospital treated and released later in the day.

Investigators say the driver was not earring his seatbelt at the time of the collision.

Two hours later the same train was involved in a collision on Road 23 West on the other side of Winkler. This time a 19-year-old female from Morden had stopped at the stop sign the proceeded across the tracks when it wasn’t safe to do so. She collided with the train and her vehicle was pushed into a ditch. The female was treated at the scene and released.

The Transportation Safety Board has been notified of the collisions

“Drivers must be cautious and aware of their surroundings. When a train is coming, vehicles should stop at least four and a half metres away from the rails and wait until the train is completely clear before proceeding. Please be vigilant and drive safe,” said Corporal Julie Courchaine of the Manitoba RCMP.

RCMP and the Canadian Pacific Railway Police continue to investigate.
