RCMP respond to an armed carjacking in Lac du Bonnet

A 60-year-old woman was carjacked at a Minnewawa Street gas station in Lac du Bonnet on Friday, October 15, 2021.

RCMP say that a male approached the woman, pulled a knife and stole her vehicle. The victim was not injured in the incident.

Police located the vehicle on Highway 11 at the intersection of Highway 44. It had been involved in a single-vehicle rollover. Police say the driver appears to have been driving too fast to make the turn onto Highway 44.

Police were able to capture the suspect after he fled the collision scene on foot. Bystanders told officers that the male had attempted to carjack a second vehicle but was unsuccessful.

Police say the 18-year-old male suspect from Lac du Bonnet was taken to hospital for a medical assessment. He remains in hospital.

Police say that after the accused was in custody they learned that the Leslie Street home he lived in had been allegedly set on fire earlier in the day. The fire is under investigation.

Police continue to investigate the carjacking.
