RCMP rescue five-year-old from burning building

Just as Moose Lake RCMP noticed a house across the street was on fire, a woman rushed in to their offices to let them know a child was trapped inside.

The fire, spotted at around 4:30 in the afternoon on January 29, 2022, was moving quickly and thick smoke began pouring from it in the time it took officers to run across the street.

Initial attempts by an officer and a member of the community to enter the house were hampered by the smoke.  Rescuers had to break out windows to vent the building enough to allow them inside.  The two officers made their way through the still burning structure by fishing in a breath through each broken window, moving room by room from window to window and breath to breath until they found the child.

The found the little boy on the floor, covered with a blanket. Officers scooped him up and immediately ran outside. The five-year-old child was transported to Winnipeg hospital, where he remains in stable condition.  An adult male, an adult female, another five-year-old male, and a two-year-old male had all been able to exit the residence and received minor physical injuries.

The officers who had entered the burning building were treated and released at the Mosakahiken Cree Nation nursing station.

The building burned to the ground and is a complete loss.  Police say the cause of the fire does not appear to be criminal in nature.
