Manitoba’s police watchdog the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) is looking into a case involving an injury sustained by a 14-year-old female during an encounter with RCMP in Portage la Prarie.
On Wednesday, February 7, 2018, RCMP responded to reports of threats made by a group of youths at the recreation centre in Portage.
As police arrived on scene a 14-year-old girl took off. Police officers chased her down and she was taken to the RCMP detachment in Portage. While at the detachment the girl complained of pain in her shoulder and arm. She was taken to hospital and doctors determined she had a broken collarbone.
The IIU was told about the incident the next day and although the injury was not serious as defined in the act the governs the IIU, Zane Tessler civilian director determined it was in the public interest for them to investigate.
The IIU investigates all serious incidents involving police officers in Manitoba, whether occurring on or off duty.
