RCMP are praising the work done by K9 “Ozzy” and handler after they helped capture a suspect who had stolen a vehicle. Ozzy is based in Portage la Prairie and over the past week has tracked down a number of suspects.

Police say that on September 15, 2017, around 8:00 pm officers in Minnedosa received a report that a vehicle similar to one that was reported stolen on social media was in the community and appeared suspicious.

RCMP patrolling in Minnedosa noticed the vehicle stopped on the shoulder of the road with the motor running. As the officer approached the vehicle it drove off. A traffic stop was attempted but the vehicle increased speed and took off. Police opted not to pursue but provided officers in the area with the last known location.
The vehicle was spotted a short time later driving into a swampy field off Provincial Road 262. The driver took off on foot. Police secured the perimeter and called in Ozzy.
Ozzy tracked and located the 42-year-old male suspect.
Jayson Alexander Balodis from Riverton was arrested and charged with the following offences for his alleged involvement:
- Possession of Property Obtained by Crime
- Flight from Police
- Resisting Arrest
- Mischief
- Several Highway Traffic Act Offences
