RCMP officers won’t be charged for impaired driving due to lack of evidence says IIU

Manitoba’s police watchdog the Independent Investigation Unit (IIU) says that two RCMP officers being investigated for possible impaired driving will not face any charges due to lack of evidence.

In July of 2017, the two off-duty officers were at a party hosted by another RCMP member and consumed alcohol then allegedly drove their personal vehicles at high speed and did donuts on highway 44. No one was injured in the incident.

The IIU was told about the incident more than a month after it occurred by RCMP and decided to investigate because the civilian director of the IIU, Zane Tessler, felt it would be in the public interest to do so.

The IIU talked to 11 people who had been at the party but could not definitively prove how much alcohol the officers had consumed or even if they had operated their vehicles.

Tessler noted that the long delay between the incident and receiving notice from the RCMP significantly affected the ability of IIU investigators to gather evidence.
