RCMP officers will not be charged over excessive force allegations

Two Manitoba RCMP officers will not be facing any charges in connection to an April 2019, arrest.

The Independent Investigation Unit of Manitoba (IIU) was called in after allegations that the officers used excessive force during the suspect’s arrest.

According to the IIU police were called to the man’s home after receiving a complaint from a female neighbour that the man had threatened and harassed her.

While officers were investigating the man became belligerent and made a verbal threat against the neighbour.

The officers told the man that he was being placed under arrest because of the threat. A struggled ensued as the male was being arrested and both the officers and the male suspect sustained injuries. The officers each suffered cuts while the suspect had an abrasion to his forehead and left hand.

The IIU investigated the incident and concluded after consultation with Manitoba Prosecution Services (MPS) that the “prosecution standard had not been met, and there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction. Accordingly, MPS would not authorize any charges against the officers. “

The investigation is complete.
